Frida survived polio at 8, a car accident at 18, and 33 surgeries, ultimately passing away at 47 years old.
The museum itself was her birthplace, her home for her last 13 years, and final resting place, renovated to become a showcase of her works and life.
Her life was one of struggles, yet she persisted in her expression of art. Being bedridden, her mother placed a mirror above her bedframe to enable self portraits, using herself as the basis for many of her own works. Self reflection was a huge aspect of her expression.
Among her famous works on display are the watermelons, and the irony of the inscription she added to them just before her death.
